Daughter of famous actress Tanuja and niece of the even more famous Nutan, Kajol made a lukewarm debut in 1992 in the film 'Bekhudi'. Despite being directed by Rahul Rawail, the film did little for her as a budding star. Followed by a few more inconsequential films such as 'Taaqat' and 'Udhar Ki Zindagi', Kajol first made her mark in 'Baazigar' opposite Shah Rukh Khan.

This was the big break they both needed and it established them as the hottest star pair of the nineties. Kajol went on to work in many big hits with Shah Rukh as her co-star such as 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge' but somehow failed to pair up with other heroes successfully. Her 'Hamesha' with Saif Ali Khan flopped miserably.

Then along came Ajay, the guy who won her heart in real life as well as in reel life. They had a phenomenal hit with 'Pyar To Hona Hi Tha', closely followed by 'Ishq'.
Neither denied their close love for each other and the only question on everyone's lips was 'when?'

Kajol went on to do meaningful films like 'Dushman' [with the volcano of talent director Tanuja Chandra], making a dynamic pair with fellow Leo Sunjay Dutt. The chemistry between the two lions was difficult to miss.

Kajol had her biggest hit with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which apart from taking the sub-continent by storm also managed to enter the British Top Ten Film Charts. Quite an achievement considering her film was being shown on all of eighteen screens whilst the other films in the British charts were being shown on at least 150 screens.

KKHH established Kajol as the most substantial heroine in Bollywood. She was also said to be the only actress whose presence in the film made the same difference as the hero. In an industry where women are added for songs or to look pretty, Kajol was chosen for her histrionic ability.

This is not to say that lacks anything in the looks department. With her fiery Leo eyes and the traditional Leo mane, she is one of the few actresses who never bothered with much war paint on their faces, looking natural at all times to the extent of retaining her natural, bushy eyebrows which only enhance her character.

'Hum Aapke Dil Main Rehte Hain' with Anil Kapoor, which resurrected his box office standing as well, followed KKHH! Another feather in Kajol's cap! Any other actress in her position would have clung to fame, money and power but not Kajol. She threw it all to the winds and married Ajay whilst she was at the top. She reduced her commitments, almost working exclusively for hubby Ajay's productions.

She is still working with old friends like Karan Johar and has a good role in his next 'Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham'. Her other films are 'Raju Chacha' and 'Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi'

Let's hope Ajay's gain doesn't become the industry's [and our] loss and Kajol continues to shine bright on the horizon of Bollywood for many years to come.
