Mumbai, Feb 24: Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan today said he was pleased with IIFA's achievements in the world arena, Sahara Samay sources said.

Amitabh, who is the brand ambassador of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards, said the voting for the prestigious awards has already begun and would continue till February 26.

"I think over the past seven years IIFA has benefited the film industry both commercially and socially. From providing a lucrative venue to creating awareness about Indian cinema...it has achieved a lot," he said.

Amitabh says apart from popularising Indian cinema abroad, IIFA also allows the film fraternity to spend quality time with each other.

"I think every year there is some progress made at the IIFA awards. We started by merely acknowledging and honouring artistes for their work," he said.

"I think it is a wonderful opportunity for the entire film industry to get together in one city in any part of the world over a period of four days. We are all neighbours in the film industry. But we don't get the time to meet one another. I think it is wonderful to be in an environment where one can relax and be with one's colleagues without stress or anxiety," he said.

Int'l Indian Academy Award noms announced

NEW DELHI -- The eighth annual International Indian Film Academy Awards nominations were announced Thursday for this year's event, set for June 7-10 in Yorkshire, England.

The IIFAs, organized by Mumbai-based event management company Wizcraft Entertainment, are held overseas every year with cities such as Johannesburg, Amsterdam, Kuala Lumpur and Dubai, among others, hosting the awards in the past.

The actioner "Dhoom 2" (Uproar), "Rang De Basanti" (Paint It Yellow), "Omkara" and the superhero caper "Krrish" lead the pack among the nominations.

Best picture nominees include "Dhoom 2"; "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" (Never Say Goodbye), a tale of marital infidelity; "Krrish"; the comedy hit "Lage Raho Munnabhai" (Keep Going Munnabhai); "Rang De Basanti"; and the romantic "Vivaah" (Marriage).

Best performance in a leading role (male) includes nominations for Shah Rukh Khan for his portrayal of a jet-setting gangster in "Don," Hrithik Roshan as a superhero in "Krrish," Sanjay Dutt in the comic lead in "Lage Raho Munnabhai" and Ajay Devgan in "Omkara."
Aishwarya Rai in "Dhoom 2," Kajol in "Fanaa" (Destroyed In Love), Kangana Ranaut in "Gangster," Rani Mukherji in "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna," Vidya Balan in "Lage Raho Munnabhai" and Kareena Kapoor in "Omkara" are the nominees for best performance in a leading role (female).

The nominees for each category are shortlisted by an industry panel, with the voting managed and monitored by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Online voting for the IIFAs is hosted on MSN India inviting fans from India and worldwide to cast their votes before May 25.

Akshay Kumar and Shilpa Shetty to perform at IIFA

International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) will be held at Yorkshire this year. The grand ceremony that IIFA is every year, this year too it will be a three day function to be held between June 7 – 10.

Every year IIFA sees a host of Bollywood celebrities as well as international film personalities. This year, Akshay Kumar and Shilpa Shetty have been finalized to perform at IIFA. Akshay Kumar is currently one of the most successful stars at the Box Office with all his films going hit. Shilpa Shetty is also cashing on her Big Brother popularity and is a big name in UK now.

The interesting part however is that, Akki and Shilpa were a couple for quite a while before Akshay got married to Twinkle Khanna. The two also had a given successful films like Main Khiladi Tu Anari and Dhadkan together. It will be exciting to see them at IIFA this year as both are also excellent performers on stage.

IIFA will take place on June 9, 2007 at Sheffield, UK.

The countdown for the most coveted I.I.F.A. Awards has begun. We at IndiaFM bring you details on those participating and performing at the event…

Performing live at the IDEA IIFA Awards this year will be Abhishek Bachchan, Salman Khan, Govinda, Shilpa Shetty, Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Bipasha Basu, Emraan Hashmi, Aftab Shivdasani and Raima Sen, choreographed to perfection by Shaimak Davar. Also, Shilpa Shetty will be performing live for the U.K. audience for the first time after her BIG BROTHER success.

IIFA awards: Yorkshire set for Bollywood blast

Leeds, Five quintessential Yorkshire towns are all set to welcome the bold and the beautiful of the India's prolific film industry for the three-day IIFA Weekend from Thursday that local officials expect will boost the region's economy by at least 10 million pounds.

Thousands of people from India and from across the world have checked into Yorkshire hotels for the India International Film Academy (IIFA) awards. Shilpa Shetty - easily the most recognised Indian in Britain for the moment - is all set to be the first celebrity to touch down at York station at 10.40 a.m. Wednesday.

Apart from the glitz and the glamour, the IIFA event has a key business dimension. Top business leaders from the world of entertainment and advertising have converged for the IIFA Global Business Forum organised with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) on Thursday.

Tom Riordan, chief executive of Yorkshire Forward, a regional business development agency, said: "Our expectation is that the event alone will bring nearly £ 10 million in tourism spend. But the awards will also act as a catalyst to access a new market. It will forge stronger business and cultural links between Yorkshire and India, which is now one of the fastest growing economies of the world".

Event organisers told IANS that actor Dharmendra and his family and director J P Dutta were scheduled to reach York Wednesday afternoon, while railways officials were expecting a major turnout at the York station on Thursday morning for the arrival of the IIFA brand ambassador, Amitabh Bachchan.

York station will also welcome other actors on Thursday such as Abhishek Bachchan, Ashwarya Rai, Shabana Azmi, Amrita Arora, Kangana Raut, Chunkey Pandey, Randhir Kapoor, Randeer Kapoor, Shaad Ali and Suniti Chauhan.

A red carpet event has been organised to celebrate Shilpa Shetty's birthday on Friday, June 8 at the Victoria Quarters. The same day, the IIFA Celebrity Cricket Match will be played at Headingley, involving leading film and cricket celebrities such as England test cricketer Monty Panesar.

Local officials believe that the region will get a major promotional boost across the globe, mainly during the main awards function on Saturday, which will be telecast live. Ten selected youngsters, dressed to impress in traditional Yorkshire cloth and cut to Indian style dresses designed by Rotherham-based designer Lena Mailk, will represent the region at the event.

Gary Topp, chief executive of Yorkshire Culture, said:"The young people taking part in these awards are a fantastic example of the region's potential. The clothes they are wearing demonstrate the rich and unique cultural mix of the region and I am proud that they are acting as our ambassadors on a truly global stage".

The 10 youngsters are: Nikhil Oswal, Arindam Banerjee, Ahmed Al-Aagam, Navita Kaushal, Lucy Skilbeck, Stuart Cowie, Ramla Aziz, Saira, Chantelle Harrison, and Mohammad Ayaz.

Lena Malik said: "I was raised surrounded by Bollywood culture. In the late 70s my grandfather and father owned the only Hindi cinema in Sheffield. So you could say my affair with Bollywood spans many years.

"As a direct result of the cinema, my family and I have come to know many locals in the community with whom we have developed very close relationships over the years; a factor that proves time and again to be the point of success for my business."

The events during the IIFA events will be held in the five Yorkshire towns of Sheffield, Leeds, Hull, Bradford and York. A retrospective of the work of reputed director Hrishikesh Mukherjee will be held during the IIFA Film Festival on Saturday in Bradford.

The IIFA-BAFTA workshop at the National Film Museum, Bradford, on Friday will focus on the work of reputed director Satyajit Ray. The workshop will be chaired by Jaya Bachchan and panelists will include directors Rituparno Ghosh and Deepa Mehta.

The Leeds Metropolitan University will award honorary doctorates to Shabana Azmi, reputed director Yash Chopra and Indian Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel during the weekend. The university's students are closely involved in the event's organisation.

London, June 6: Yorkshire is all set to witness the glitz and glam of Bollywood as movie stars led by Amitabh Bachchan started arriving at the British county to attend the eighth International Indian Film Academy awards (IIFA), which kicks off on Thursday.

There will be 50 IIFA-related events in Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, York and Hull during the four-day extravaganza, with an estimated 500 Bollywood personalities expected to participate, according to Sabbas Joseph, director of Wizcraft,

which is managing the show.

Judith Donovan, chairman of the Yorkshire Tourist Board, said she expected 28,000 extra tourists, half of them from overseas, to visit Yorkshire during the event, which is likely to be watched on television by some 500 million people worldwide.

The sheer scale, height, glam, glitz is just going to be mind-blowing," Donovan, who returned recently from a trip to India aimed at promoting Yorkshire's heritnt to the Oscars, at Sheffield's Hallam FM Arena on Saturday, which will see in attendance the likes of Amitabh Bachchan along with son Abhishek and wife Aishwarya Rai.

"A digital revolution is under way in India in the entertainment sector," Mitra said. "There can be joint ventures in this because there is synergy with British companies - an Indian animator can tie up with a British animator."

London, June 7: The International Indian Film Academy IIFA (IIFA) awards will make a grand opening at Yorkshire today.

A host of stars started arriving at the British county to attend the eighth IIFA awards.

There will be 50 IIFA-related events in Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, York and Hull during the four-day extravaganza.

Around 500 Bollywood celebrities are expected to participate, according to Sabbas Joseph, director of Wizcraft, which is managing the show.

Judith Donovan, chairman of the Yorkshire Tourist Board, said she expected 28,000 extra tourists. IIFA is likely to be watched on television by some 500 million people worldwide.

"The sheer scale, height, glam, glitz is just going to be mind-blowing," Donovan said.
The main event will be the awards ceremony, the Bollywood equivalent to the Oscars, at Sheffield's Hallam FM Arena on Saturday.

Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan along with son Abhishek and wife Aishwarya Rai will grace the occasion.

Other top Bollywood stars expected to walk the red carpet include Ajay Devgan and Kajol, Salman Khan, John Abraham and Bipasha Basu, Shilpa Shetty, Hrithik Roshan, Rani Mukherjee, Saif Ali Khan, Konkana Sen Sharma, Rakyesh Mehra, Yash Chopra, Karan Johar, Priyanka Chopra, Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Rituparno Ghosh and Govinda.

Star-struck Yorkshire Celebrates As Bollywood Honours Talent


Saturday 09th of June 2007 Over 20,000 fans witnessed the grand opening of a star-studded extravaganza, which began late Saturday night, to honour Bollywood personalities for their performances in the last year.

The elaborate set decoration, mega decibel music and presence of top names of the Indian film industry - Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek, Aishwarya, Yash Chopra, Shilpa Shetty, the Deols, Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta - made the event a spectacle for the audience.


Speaking at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards ceremony, Amitabh praised Yorkshire for its hospitality and added that last year was eventful for the Indian film industry as not only did it taste major achievements but also new genres of filmmaking were experimented with.


He reiterated that Bollywood now had a global platform.


The awards night has begun well for "Dhoom:2", "Fanaa" and "Rang De Basanti", as they have bagged two awards each.


The Best Editor's award has gone to P.S. Bharti for "Rang De Basanti", Best Make-up award was bagged by J.A. James for "Dhoom:2" and Anaita Shroff Adajania won the Best Costume award for her brilliant innovations with outfits in "Dhoom:2".


Versatile singer Sunidhi Chauhan received the Best Female Singer award for her runaway hit song 'Beedi Jalaile...' from the film "Omkara", Bollywood's adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Othello". Meanwhile, Shaan bagged the Best Male Singer award for 'Chand Sifarish...' from the film "Fanaa".


The Best Lyricist award has gone to Prasoon Joshi for penning the song 'Chand Sifarish...' from "Fanaa" while A.R. Rahman has won the Best Music award for his soulful melodies in "Rang De Basanti".

SHEFFIELD, England (Reuters) - Rang De Basanti won best picture at this year's International Indian Film Awards -- Bollywood's version of the Oscars.

The eighth annual IIFA awards took place in the 12,000 seater Sheffield Hallam arena in northern England on Saturday night stretching into the early hours of Sunday as Bollywood's biggest stars celebrated their best films of the last year.

The film, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, stars Aamir Khan, and also won Filmfare's best movie award along with almost a dozen other gongs at the IIFA awards.

In the movie, a young London based film maker chances upon the diaries of her grandfather, who served in the British police force in India. The film deals with Indian independence, patriotism and contemporary India.

The award for best actor went to Hrithik Roshan for his role in Krrish -- billed as India's first superhero movie.

"May our children never be afraid to dream the impossible because ... someone like me could get this far," said Roshan, who also won the gong for the most glamorous male lead.

Best actress went to Rani Mukherji for her role in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kahna.

The awards were created seven years ago to promote Indian films to an international audience. Previous ceremonies have been held in the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands and Singapore.

SHEFFIELD (YORKSHIRE): 'Rang de Basanti' walked away with top honours, including for best film, in most of the categories it was nominated for the eighth IIFA Awards as glamour, emotion and an electric atmosphere combined to make for an unforgettable star-studded ceremony here.

Besides being adjudged the best film, 'Rang de Basanti', Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's take on modern day patriotism, bagged as many as 11 awards, including for best actress in a supporting role for Soha Ali Khan.

The glittering ceremony, which began on Saturday night and ended early on Sunday, was interspersed with electrifying performances from Abhishek Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Salman Khan, Govinda and Shilpa Shetty, and was watched by thousands of expatriates from all over Britain.

While Rani Mukerjee won Best Actress trophy for her performance in 'Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna', the Best Actor award went to Hrithik Roshan for his superhero act in 'Krrish'.

Other major winners included Raj Kumar Hirani as Best Director and Arshad Warsi as Best Supporting Actor for 'Lage Raho Munnabhai.'

Some of Bollywood's biggest names, including IIFA brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan, son Abhishek and daughter- -in-law Aishwarya, attended the marathon four-hour function, along with more than 50,000 people.

The evening hit an emotional note during the presentation for Lifetime Achievement Award to Dharmendra, who got standing ovation from the audience as he was presented the trophy by Amitabh Bachchan.

"Very few people know that it was on Dharmendra's insistence that I got the role of Jay in 'Sholay'. If it were not for him, I would never have been a part of this great film. My wife describes him as a Greek God, but for me, he has always been a very good human being," Bachchan said.

Sons Bobby and Sunny also joined their father on stage, and Bobby was reduced to tears as he attempted to say a few words about Dharmendra.

"I was a small town boy in Phagwara and I used to look at this magical world of cinema and wonder if I would ever be a part of it. From those days to this stage, it has been a very eventful journey," Dharmendra said.

The IIFA awards also honoured veteran filmmaker Basu Chatterjee with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The awards also recognised Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan as the most glamorous stars of the year, while filmmaker Deepa Mehta got a trophy for Outstanding Achievement by an Indian in international cinema.

The loudest cheers were, however, reserved for an impromptu jig by father-son duo Amitabh and Abhishek who danced to the hit number from their latest blockbuster 'Jhoom Barabar Jhoom'.

Kajol doesn`t wanted to do this movies because of the script, it was not an excellent mature story for an actresse who want to make a comback. Fanna was the best movie for kajol, and the best movie for making a comback. she was good in fanaa, Am movie, which showed the three parts of a femal life. In that year if Im not mistaken she got all other awards except IIFA and Z awards (but her work was praised giving her a spcl award by Zee for her role in K3G)....

The film beat off competition from movies including Dhoom 2, a thriller starring Bollywood golden couple Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, and sci-fi hit Krrish at the International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFAs) held in Sheffield.

Directed by Rakeysh Omprakesh Mehra and starring Amir Khan, Rang De Basanti, which means 'Paint It Yellow,' is about a filmmaker who wants to shoot a movie on Indian nationalists who rose up against British colonial rule.

AdvertisementThe director, played by Alice Patten, daughter of Chris Patten, Britain's last governor in Hong Kong, tries to cast five friends but finds they are more interested in dancing than history.

Said Rakeysh who received his award from Abishekh and Aishwarya: "This has been truly a fabulous year. This award becomes much more special when you see the other films nominated in this category."

Shilpa Shetty received a special award for how she handled herself over the Big Brother racism row and highlighting Indian cinema to a global audience.

Said Shilpa: "I am extremely happy to be receiving this award especially as this is my first award ever. Thank you Yorkshire for supporting me. I wish my films did just as well!"

Hrithik Roshan added another feather to his cap with the title of the best actor for Krrish while Rani Mukherjee was awarded the best actress for Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna.

Hrithik dedicated the award to his son and whilst Rani could not make it to the event, director of the film Karan Johar was on hand to pick it up and give a huge speech on Rani's behalf. :somad:

"Many people criticised Rani's role as they did not understand it, but this award shows that people out there do understood it and I am proud to be picking it up on her behalf."

Raj Kumar Hirani won the best director for the film Lage Raho Munnabhai.

Sunidhi Chauhan won the best female playback singer. The music category was dominated by the Fanaa team, as Prasoon Joshi bagged the award for best lyrics and Shaan was rewarded for the best male singer for his rendition ‘Chand Sifarsh’ :deg:

Veteran actor Dharmendra was accoladed with the lifetime achievement award for his contribution to films over the last 50 years.
He received his award from old acting buddy Amitabh Bachchan.

Dharmendra, who has starred in 231 movies, dedicated the award to his fans.

He said: "This is your award in your name."

He was joined on stage by sons Sunny and Bobby Deol.

Bobby shed tears of joy as he hugged his father and told the screaming crowd: "I am here today doing so well because of my dad. He is the best."

Amitabh praised Dharmendra for helping him breakthrough into Bollywood.

He said: "If it wasn't for Dharamji I would never have been casted in Sholay. He put my name forward and pushed for me to get the part. I am still thankful to him to this day.

"Even though we have worked together and we live very close by in Mumbai we hardly ever see each other and events like this gives us a chance to catch up."

He added: "Dharamji is the most wonderful friend and the most wonderful human you can come across".

I am wondering why Iffa is always agianst kajol....or i am wondering how much karan paid Iffa to get this best actresses awrds for rani :lol:

You know guys what me make so angry....? That karan gived at Iifa a huge speech about rani. But at Zee cine he didn`t even said one word like Kunal. said on FF. As a freind karan have to say somthing about her..at least one word. :somad: karan make me angry.......

and oh Karan, maybe he said this because, many people talked bad about KANK and Ranis character, so he allow her this award ... *sigh*
