Its official Esha is that other woman!
When it comes to projecting real life stories on reel, no one can beat the Bhatts.
After Mahesh Bhatt's sensational but sensitive 'Arth', it is Vikram Bhatt's turn to project his unsuccessful romance with Sushmita Sen on-screen. At least that's what they are telling us in Bollywood.
Produced by Pritish Nandy Communications Vikram Bhatt's new film 'Aakhir' stars Aftab Shivdasani, Amisha Patel and Esha Deol in the lead roles.
The film encounters the emotional conflict and trauma faced by Bhatt with his wife during his courtship period with Sush. While the director denies the angle of his previous love life but resemblance remains striking.
However Aftab admits the facts and reveals, "I play Vikram Bhatt’s role in his life story. It’s very exciting for me to work with Vikram, as it’s my first film with him and PNC.”
Esha Deol plays the role of the other woman (Sushmita Sen), while Amisha plays the role of Vikram's wife.

Sticking it out
Aftab Shivdasani, hoping to be back from the brink with Koi Aap Sa, to team up with David Dhawan also. By Lata Sinha
Not too many people know this. But when his dream project, Shukriya, bombed Aftab Shivdasani went into acute depression. “That was the biggest shock of my life. Everyone associated with Shukriya said it was a Sholay in the making. Naturally, all of us got carried away. It was very dear to me. When the film flopped, for nine whole months from October 8, 2004 onwards, I withdrew completely from public view. I sat at home, let my hair grow, didn’t care about what I looked like or what I did. It was a time of great turmoil for me. I had to make decisions about the way my life and career went. Nothing interested me. I wanted to rejuvenate myself. In those nine months I turned down innumerable assignments. People thought I had gone nuts. And now my second phase has begun. Right now I’m shooting for Vikram Bhatt’s Ankahee where I play a very complicated character, and a man much older than I am…just like I did in Vikram’s Qasoor.”
Aftab plays a doctor in Ankahee. “It has elements from Vikram Bhatt’s life. But it isn’t autobiographical. I’ve surrendered completely to the director’s vision. Vikram is guiding me through the film. This is my fourth film with him. He and Ramu are directors I trust blindly.”
The turbulent period has ended with a crop of new films including Vikram Bhatt’s Ankahee, Ekta Kapoor’s Koi Aap Saa, and most interesting of all, David Dhawan’s next. “I’ve never worked with David Dhawan before. He has been telling me that he would like to work with me for a long time. He always says I’m very talented. That’s very encouraging. But nothing materialised until now. The best thing about David’s film is that I’d be working with Sunjay Dutt. Sunjay is such a sweetheart. I’m really looking forward to working with him. There can never be any friction with your costar when it’s someone as accommodating as Sunjay Dutt.”
About his new release, Aftab says Ekta Kapoor had been in talks with him for a while. “But something always went wrong. I didn’t want to say ‘no’ to Koi Aap Sa because it dealt with a social issue. That’s something she’s very good at. It’s a character-driven plot. Only three principal characters take the narrative forward. But it’s not a triangle nor is it an unconventional film. To be very honest, Koi Aap Sa is the last of my candy-floss films. It’s right up my alley. Ankahee is the assignment where I really go into a different orbit as an actor.”
Aftab is busy reinventing with himself. “My double role in Jaane Hoga Kya will shock people. It’s a thriller, unlike any other, with not a hint of comedy…Not that I don’t enjoy comedy. But a guy has to get serious some time in life. In Darwaza Band Rakho, which is a black comedy by Chekravarthy I’ve changed my appearance completely. I play a kidnapper who holds the heroine hostage. I’ve done a funny kidnapping caper, Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega, before. But this is serious stuff.”
Next, Aftab goes into Subhash Ghai-Satish Kaushik’s Shaadi Se Pehle with Akshaye Khanna and Ayesha Takia. “It’s a mad-mad film. I love doing comedy. That’s why I’m looking forward to working with Zayed Khan and Sunjay Dutt in David Dhawan’s film. Why am I not in the Awaara Paagal Deewana sequel? Producer Feroz Nadiadwala should answer that. I also have an action film with Ramu next year…So this is the best most productive phase of my career. Six years are up. The second half has started. Thank God for the nine-month layoff. It helped me bounce back.”
Aftab admits he has no good friends in the film industry. “No one here you can count on, so why fool ourselves with these silly thoughts? We’re all here to work. I’ve to work doubly hard since I’m an outsider, no godfather and no sugar daddy. An uphill struggle all the way.”
Aftab guards his privacy very intensely. “I know that makes me a boring copy. But so be it. I’m willing to be left out of centre-spread write-ups. I’d rather not be written about than have my private life up for public consumption. I’m very moody…I like to be alone or with my handful of friends, none of them from the industry, who have been with me from my childhood.”
He admits his much talked-about friendship with Esha Deol has added a sensuous frisson to their characters in Vikram Bhatt’s Ankahee. “We’re comfortable doing our characters because we’ve known each other for a long time.”

That’s the spirit...
Vikram Bhatt’s Rooh has been revived after running into troubled waters
Kunal M Shah
Vikram Bhatt's Rooh has been in troubled waters for some time owing to differences between its lead actor, newcomer Alisha, and its producer, Ramesh Sippy. Now, after eight months of problem-solving, the film is back on track again. Shooting starts from March 5.
“The shooting of Rooh was stalled because there were some issues between the producer and Alisha, who is from the South, regarding the contract,” explains director Vikram Bhatt. “The producers wanted to sign her for a certain number of films, under the contract, while she wanted to sign only a couple of films. Alisha was not ready to agree to the condition that she would have to get the producer's approval before signing new films. Besides, the producer was busy with the completion and release of Taxi No. 9211 and Bluff Master. However, now things have fallen into place and everyone is happy. The contract is now ready and signed.”
Rooh is a ghost story, to be filmed completely with newcomers, “for fresh appeal” as Bhatt puts it. The film stars newcomers Alisha, Swapnil and Amit Gaur.
Meanwhile Bhatt is geared up to release his next film, Ankahee, produced by Pritish Nandy Communications, starring Esha Deol, Amisha Patel and Aftab Shivdasani. “There was a time when I felt that I need to do some honest work,” says Bhatt. “I feel Ankahee is the result of that work. I have given my best to it.”
Bhatt, however, denies that the film is based on his life. “It is merely inspired from my life and there is a big difference between the two,” he says. “I did some soul-searching and Ankahee is the result of that. Quite frankly, I was tired of the kind of work that I was doing.” Ankahee is slated to release in April.
Bhatt is also doing another film with PNC. “Yes, we have signed Fardeen Khan for the film. It's called Naam, and the rest of the casting is still being finalised.”

“Somehow Esha Deol was lost in these three heroines-two hero kind of films. She hasn't done anything histrionic or hysterical before this” - Vikram Bhatt
By IndiaFM News Bureau, May 12, 2006 - 00:02 IST
After seeking inspiration from Hollywood DVD's, this time Vikram Bhatt gets inspired from himself. Bhatt takes pride in making a movie that is replica of his personal life. After making action comedies and thrillers, Vikram this time is all set to present a realistic, emotional drama in his forthcoming movie, Ankahee.
Talking to IndiaFM, Vikram Bhatt says the unsaid - Ankahee.
What is Ankahee all about?
As its marketing says, the film is close to my heart. And it's inspired by the emotions that I felt at a time in my life. It's a kind of cinema that I haven't attempted before. It is a realistic portrayal of emotions and it's a new turn for me.
Ankahee is inspired by the emotions that I felt at some time in my life.
It has been widely spoken in the media that Ankahee is about your relationship with Sushmita Sen. How much of truth is in it?
I have been trying to clear this from a long time that it is not about Sushmita Sen. It is not based on the actress Sushmita Sen and has got nothing to do with her. Rather, it's based on emotions. I have taken these fictional characters. It's about a doctor, a glamorous miss world and a house wife. I have taken whatever emotions I felt in that time of my life. It's not about a person in particular. You may ask why the other woman is a Miss world or a celebrity. I would like to clarify it too. In some phase of your life, you see it being played out in front of the media. That happens when one of the people is a celebrity. A lot of extra marital affairs happen, but no one reports them. When a person is a celebrity, then the media circus happens. This media circus is very much a part of my life.
Ankahee is not based on Sushmita Sen and has got nothing to do with her.
So it's nothing to do with Sushmita. But has it got something to do with you?
It's about nobody else but me. The film is also about a father talking to his daughter, who he has not met for 16 years. That's how the film begins. He wants to tell her his side of the story and about what he went through. What made him do what he did? Ultimately, no one was the winner in whole situation.
Ankahee is also about a father talking to his daughter, who he has not met for 16 years.
After action and comedy, why did you think of taking up an emotional drama?
I thought I was repeating myself. Once you find success, you start repeating yourself. I got success with Kasoor and Raaz. I thought thrillers are going to work for me. Suddenly I felt that repeating anything is not success, but breaking new ground is. But Ankahee is not for success, but a need that I have to tell a story. This story was within me from a long time. I remember that Mahesh Bhatt, my guru had once told me that there is one story inside me that only I can make. I don't know what he meant. I thought he meant Raaz and that only I can make supernatural films. But now I think what he meant was this film. No one else can make Ankahee.
A lot of extra marital affairs happen, but no one reports them. When a person is a celebrity, then the media circus happens.
How did the casting happen?
Well, it was not a very mysterious process! Aftab is a friend and somebody I have worked with in the past. I think he is a very good and underrated actor. He is a friend and I don't hesitate in talking about anything to him. We could share lot of things off the set or before he came on the set. I felt really comfortable.
Amisha is a very good actress. And I have being saying in other interviews also. I can't imagine Ankahee without Amisha. Whenever I look at the character of Nandita, I feel no one can be Nandita but Amisha. I don't think it's possible without her.
Finally Esha is untapped. We have seen films like Yuva where Esha has done really well. Somehow, she was lost in these three heroines-two hero kind of films. When I narrated this to her, she found it challenging. She thought she could reinvent herself. We discovered her progress as an actress. I think it has worked out for all of us.
I can't imagine Ankahee without Amisha.
Esha has a notably different look in Ankahee.
Yes, indeed she looks very different. We did approach one or two other actresses for the same role. But then we zeroed in on Esha. As I said, she was untapped. She hasn't done anything histrionic or hysterical before this. When an actor becomes too predictable, you don't enjoy their films. So it's good that Esha has rediscovered herself.
You did four films with Aftab. So was he an obvious choice?
Yes, Aftab was my first choice but then things went wrong. Then it went to Sanjay Suri and then it came back to Aftab!
What is the USP of this film?
I think it's a very good story. It's got great emotions, writing and music.
Pritam's music is also doing really well. Tell us something about that.
It has great heart felt music. It's the kind of music that makes you cry and touches your soul. It's not the usual music.
Music has not been promoted the way it should be. What do you have to say about that?
Well I always feel that you can't keep good tunes down just like you can't keep a good man down. It will find its way to the ears eventually. If it's not good, it won't survive.
PNC and you have come together for the first time. How was it working with them?
Well they are a good corporate house. They know what filmmaking is all about. They are extremely organized and I think they have a well oiled machinery that understands cinema. They gave me all the support that I needed as a director.
PNC are extremely organized and I think they have a well oiled machinery that understands cinema.
None of the actors of Ankahee are on career highs. So what kind of opening do you expect?
No, I don't expect a very big opening. I expect average houses though the audience should like it. I expect the film to grow!
Your past few movies haven't done well. Why should people go for Ankahee?
Well I think people are clever! I think, people are very forgiving. They go and buy a ticket and enjoy the film. They really don't care about the filmmaker, as long as the story is good. I think they want good stories. People go either to cry, laugh or to get scared. I think people will go to watch this film to cry and will love it.
Tell us something about your forthcoming films.
My forthcoming films include Ramesh Sippy's Rooh which is a supernatural thriller. It's a ghost story with new comers. Then there is film called Red. There is Harry Baweja's Speed starring Zayed Khan and Aftab Shivdasani. It's an action thriller which has four stories woven into each.

Kunal Ganjawala turns a rock star in 'Ankahee' promotional video
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, May 13, 2006]
Well, there are singers beyond Himesh Reshammiya!
That's the impression one gets after watching the latest promotional music video on air, this time for the film 'Ankahee'. For a specially created music video that has been shot in black, white and grey colors, the song 'Tumse Yu Milenge' bears a classy look to it that compliments the overall look, feel and style of the movie. Kunal Ganjawala appears as the rock star behind the mike as he sings with a passion that is more than visible on screen. While Aftab too appears in the video that has been set in a large isolated theatre, it is Ganjawala who makes most of the situation and comes up with a knockout performance.
Pritam delivers one of the best soundtracks of the year for 'Ankahee' that is a Vikram Bhatt film and hits the screens next Friday!

Ameesha's Ankahee talks with Esha
Recently a tabloid claimed that Ameesha had asked producer Pritish Nandy not to promote her co-actor Esha Deol in Ankahee. After reading the report, Ameesha was extremely disturbed. However, instead of clarifying the issue with the media, she called Esha directly and sorted out the matter amicably. Apparently, Ameesha and Esha get along very well and they are the best of buddies now.

Sush: The untold
Ankahee was speculated to be a film based on the director Vikram Bhatt's personal life focusing on Vikram Bhatt's relationship with Sushmita Sen. The plot of the film is also similar where a married man falls in love with an actress who has been a beauty queen. Yet, something in the movie surprised everyone. Esha Deol's character, supposedly to be of Sushmita's, was constantly shown to be suicidal. While director says that it does not have any relation with Sushmita, sources claim that it has been inspired from Bhatt's real life. Esha is shown to be very possessive and is struggling with the pressures of her career. Insiders also claim that those who know Sushmita well will be able to indentify with the role. Sushmita is out of town and not available for comments.

Movie Review
By Taran Adarsh, May 19, 2006 - 17:18 IST
Vikram Bhatt goes the Mahesh Bhatt way. After making a series of masala films with flourish, Vikram narrates a story that is straight out of life -- his life, to be precise. When a celebrity-storyteller gets into an autobiographical mood, narrating incidents from his life, which have never been told/heard/written about before, anyone and everyone is bound to be curious and inquisitive.
ANKAHEE takes a look at relationships. The premise -- a married man torn between two women -- has been done to death in Bollywood. But it’s the treatment that makes or mars a concept. Thankfully, ANKAHEE works because Vikram narrates his story in the most convincing fashion.
For any emotional story to strike a chord, it ought to be embellished with [i] Emotional moments that touch the core of your heart and [ii] Dexterous performances by the principal star cast. And in both these departments, ANKAHEE works in a big way.
Shekhar [Aftab Shivdasani] is married to Nandita [Amisha Patel]. The relationship only gets better with the birth of a girl, Sheena. Everything seems perfect. Till Miss World and Bollywood star Kavya Krishna [Esha Deol] walks into his hospital with a slit wrist.
Kavya is beautiful. Like the rest of the world, Shekhar falls in love with her. For Kavya, Shekhar is the lifeline. Her anchor. The only person in the world who can make her happy. And Kavya wants, needs, struggles to be happy.
Nandita, of course, is stuck in the middle. Shekhar is her husband. The only man she has ever loved. And yet, he finds it only too easy to walk away. From her. From their home. From Sheena.
ANKAHEE is about the truth that was left unspoken between a man, his wife and their daughter. And the lies that need to be uncovered.
In many ways, ANKAHEE bears a striking similarity to Mahesh Bhatt’s ARTH. The other woman [also from the glamour industry here] is also a maniac, suffering from acute depression. Then, when the wife gets to know of her husband’s affair with a beauty queen/actress, she pleads her case to the other woman in a manner similar to Shabana Azmi’s telephonic conversation with the silent Smita Patil. Much later, the wife decides to start life afresh and when the husband does return to her, she slams the door on him.
The difference between ARTH and ANKAHEE is that there’s a child involved when the break-up occurs and how it affects not just the couple, but also the kid.
If ANKAHEE is autobiographical by nature, purportedly based on Vikram Bhatt’s life, then you’ve got to give it to the director for accepting the blame for the failed relationship. In fact, Aftab actually emerges as the culprit for the failed marriage, walking out on his wife and kid, smitten by a beauty queen who seems overtly possessive of him.
In terms of execution, ANKAHEE is embellished with a number of brilliant sequences. Sample these:
- Esha’s introduction in the initial reels sets the mood.
- Amisha confronting Aftab after the affair is out in the open, courtesy Midday, has been handled with élan.
- Amisha visiting Aftab in his clinic, requesting him to work on the marriage, is straight out of life.
- The estranged parents visiting the school principal and the child asking her father if it’s true he’s having an affair with Kavya, would melt even the stone-hearted.
- Amisha going to Esha’s house and pleading her case is handled with utmost sensitivity.
On the flip side, the subject caters to a particular section of moviegoers mainly. It’s more for the mature viewers, the elite, the ladies in particular. For all those who have an appetite for refined, true to life cinema. But definitely not for the aam junta that looks for time pass or meaningless entertainers.
Also, the slow narrative throws a spanner. The sequence of events unfolds at a lethargic pace, more so in the first hour. Besides, there’s not much movement in the story in the first half, once the characters are established.
Screenplay writers Yash-Vinay and Vikram Bhatt have penned a script that gallops straight into your heart. It wouldn’t be wrong to state that the director gets a major boost only because the writing is cohesive and consistent. Not once does the story deviate towards unwanted tracks. Even the dialogues [Girish Dhamija] compliment the emotional graph of the story.
There’s no denying that ANKAHEE is Vikram Bhatt’s most accomplished work to date. Not only is the film rich in emotions, so vital for a film that tackles relationships, even the performances that Vikram has extracted from his actors is commendable. The subject material would’ve fallen flat in inept hands, no two opinions on that. Pritam’s music is in sync with the mood of the film. ‘Tumse Yun Milenge’ is the pick of the lot. Cinematography [Praveen Bhatt] is up to the mark.
It would be unfair to single out any one performance. But, of course, Esha’s character stands out due to the grey shades. Esha makes you sit up with a power-packed performance this time. She never got an opportunity to prove herself earlier and now that she does get one in ANKAHEE, she comes up with an award-worthy performance this time around.
Aftab excels in a role that would’ve been difficult to portray by an average actor. He enacts the role of a weak man with complete understanding, not looking out of place even once. ANKAHEE easily ranks as his finest performance so far. A performance that’s bound to be noticed and talked about.
Amisha is in form after a long, long time -- after GADAR to be precise. She is controlled, expressive and portrays her part with gusto. Hrishita Bhatt and the child artist are both expressive. Amin Hajee and Ashwini lend admirable support.
On the whole, ANKAHEE is a sensitive tale that has been executed and performed with flourish. At the box-office, it caters to the elite crowd and ladies mainly -- those who have an appetite for true to life, mature and meaningful cinema. The film has the merits to grow with a strong word of mouth in days to come. Its business at multiplexes of metros should be the best. Recommended!
