<u>Karan’s Girlfriend jilted by Sena, lesbians
</u>
Lesbian groups slam Sena, say film only ‘pretends’ to take up issues
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE * * * * *
Posted online: Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at 0000 hours IST
MUMBAI, JUNE 15: Nobody's happy with Girlfriend. Neither the lesbian groups — even if they support director Karan Razdan’s freedom of expression — and certainly not the Shiv Sena. Though Girlfriend's lesbian character is portrayed negatively — she goes on a psychotic rampage at the end — activists of the Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena, Sena’s student wing, stopped screenings of the film at Premiere theatre in Parel yesterday.
The domino effect? The film was withdrawn from other theatres as well, after a peaceful four-day run. Director Karan Razdan is shocked: ‘‘The hysteria is not because of the film’s content but because they’re trying to take political mileage from a film that is doing well,’’ he says.
The Lesbians and Bisexuals in Action group strongly condemned not only the Sena action but ‘‘also the manner in which the film itself pretends to talk about the issue of lesbianism’’. Both threaten lesbians in India, said a group representative. ‘‘We call on people to stand with us in opposing the Sena’s efforts at silencing our sexuality,’’ said Ashok Row Kavi of Humsafar Trust.
Razdan insists he made neither a pro nor anti-lesbian film. ‘‘The film is a tragic story of a girl who has to remain a closet lesbian because society can’t handle it,’’ he adds. ‘‘I am not saying support the lesbian groups, I am just saying that we should accept them.’’
Despite the ban, Girlfriend has already recovered 75 per cent of its Rs 2 crore budget at the box office. ‘‘For a non-star cast film, that’s a feat. The controversy will only benefit the film,’’ says trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

You're right Rjt, that should explain the confusion of the mix-up. It was totally mind boggling how they could associate Karan's name with that movie. I bet Karan would be totally horrified to know that people could think that "Girlfriend" came from the family oriented love your parents Yashraj banner.

End of an era: Yash Johar succumbs to illness
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday, June 26, 2004 (Mumbai):
Noted film maker Yash Johar passed away at a suburban hospital tonight after prolonged illness. He was 75.
Johar was admitted to the Leelavati Hospital on June 19 for acute chest congestion. He had been on life-support system for the last few days.
The funeral will be held at 11 am (IST) on Sunday at Shivaji Park, family sources said.
Extravagant hits
Johar was known for giving memorable hits like Muqaddar ka Faisla, Agneepath, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhie Kushi Kabhie Gham and Kal Ho Na Hoto the Indian cinema.
His death marks the end of a glorious era and films, known for their opulence and dramatic extravaganza, scattered over breath-taking locations.
Zooming Mercedes cars, whirring blades of helicopters, sprawling well-pruned lawns and aesthetically constructed mansions always formed part of the huge celluloid screen when it came to Johar's pictures.
Humble beginning
Johar, whose films carried a healthy blend of high moral values, deep-rooted Indian traditions, and stories set in exotic locales, began his career as a photographer.
He worked as a production assistant in the 1950's, and picked up the finer nuances of film production from stalwarts like S Mukherjee, Dev Anand and Sunil Dutt.
He soon earned himself the name as one of the best production managers, who knew how to handle the team aptly with ease and elan.
New banner
He subsequently launched his own banner Dharma Production. starting out with his old friend Raj Khosla in Dostana, he went on to give out many hits.
What made him stand out from the others was his forte for spotting potential stories and translating them into potboilers.
His son, Karan Johar, inherited his father's Midas touch, and carries on the legacy of the hit films that characterised Johar Senior's lifetime of work. (PTI)

<u>Bollywood loses Yash *
</u>
Pioneer News Service/ Mumbai
Film producer extraordinaire Yash Johar, who churned out many blockbusters, passed away here on Saturday night after prolonged illness, family sources said. * *
Johar, 75, is survived by wife and film director son Karan Johar.
*
Yash, who had made films like 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hain' and 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham', was admitted to the suburban Lilavati Hospital on June 19 for acute chest congestion. He had been on life support system for the last few days. Yash had undergone a minor surgery at the Bombay Hospital and was to leave for London for treatment before being admitted to the Lilavati Hospital. The funeral would be held at 11 am on Sunday at the Shivaji Park, family sources said.
*
A pall of gloom descended on Bollywood after the news of his death spread. Several film stars and directors rushed to his house. Shahrukh Khan, who was at his bedside, is reported to have 'cried like a baby', while Amitabh Bachchan was among the first to reach the Johars' residence.
*
Yash Johar was a senior member of the Film Producers Guild of India. Some of the hit films he produced under the 'Dharma Productions' banner included 'Dostana', 'Duniya Meri Jeb Main', 'Muqaddar ka Faisla', 'Agneepath', 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hain', 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham' and 'Kal Ho Na Ho'.
*
Johar began as a production assistant way back in the 1950's, Johar worked with noted names like S Mukherjee, Dev Anand and Sunil Dutt and picked up the finer nuances of film production from these stalwarts.
For a person, who began with his eye on a camera, his forte for spotting potential stories and translating them into potboilers, made him stand out in the film industry.
*
Johar's films are known for their exotic locales and lavish sets as well as rich family values.
*
Zooming Mercedes, the whirring blades of the helicotper, sprawling well-pruned lawns and aesthetically constructed mansions always formed part of the huge celluloid screen when it came to Johar's pictures.
He has worked with various leading names, including Amitabh Bachchan, Sridevi, Sanjay Dutt and his favourite star, Sharukh Khan.
*
Very soon he earned himself the name as one of the best production managers, who knew how to handle the team aptly with ease and elan.
*
His passion and dynamism saw him working as the production manager of all the leading film makers who came down from the West to shoot in India.
*
Having started his Dharma Production, he began producing his own films. Starting out with his old friend Raj Khosla in 'Dostana', he subsequently produced films like 'Agneepath' with Amitabh Bachchan, and 'Gumrah' with Sanjay Dutt and Sridevi.
Actor Sharukh Khan turned out to be his lucky mascot with whom he teamed up to produce hits like 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai', 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham', which turned out to be money spinners.

It's all about being Yash Johar
MADHUREETA MUKHERJEE / INDIATIMES MOVIES
[ SATURDAY, JUNE 26, 2004 10:43:21 PM ]
It's all in the family. Eons ago, Yash Johar made some unforgettable films like Dostana and Duniya Mere Jeb Main . From being a photographer, the production controller and finally a producer, he culled his inherent talent over the years to master every aspect of making cinema.
And today his son, Karan Johar has inherited his father's creative eye, of envisaging every story as a larger-than-life picture. Yash Johar's Dharma Productions has dished out some of the biggest hits in recent times - Kuch Kuch Hota Hai , Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kal Ho Na Ho .
And the common factor in all of them is the King of them all - Shah Rukh Khan. Some say he is the Johars' lucky mascot; but the veteran filmmaker claims that for him relationships matter more than stars, and it's all about being one family.
A heart-to-heart conversation with Yash Johar, where he talks about his years in the film industry, his favourite stars and, most of all, the apple of his eye: Karan Johar.
Whenever Yash Johar and Karan Johar team up, the result is a super-success...
"The creative side of the films are totally taken care of by Karan. Even when he is not directing, his mind, heart and soul is in the film, as the script is completely his. The scripts are the foundation of a film; if that is strong, the building is sure to be a good one. I provide the material to make the film, that's it. The credit entirely goes to Karan."
Didn't you have second thoughts roping in a new director instead of Karan for your recent Kal Ho Na Ho ?
"Nikhil was already associate director for two of my previous films and he was two years senior to Karan in school, so he wasn't new to us. I gave him a free hand in handling the film creatively. He is hard-working and talented, so we dropped the 'associate' from the title and made him director."
A Yash Johar film is always extravagant – with palaces, foreign locales, helicopters and Mercedes'. You are known as a luxurious filmmaker...
"I give my films all that they need; I spare nothing. From K3G , to Kal Ho Na Ho , I don't leave a stone unturned to give my film that larger-than-life look, just what my script needs. Look, in Kal Ho Na Ho , we could have shot in the outskirts of New York city and curbed our expenses, but we shot in proper NY, everyone stayed in the same hotel and I wasn't stingy about anything. When we were shooting here, there were dancers flown down from abroad for the dance sequences. I have always been lavish with my expenditure and presentation. You can see the result on-screen."
The combination of Shah Rukh, Kajol and Rani seems to be working in all your films. Are your lucky mascots going to be a permanent feature in your projects?
"No, it's not like that exactly. Our relationship with these stars is so good that we like working with them, and even they like to be a part of our team all the time. We love them as much as they love us. It's got to be mutual."
You seem to know the pulse of the audience; you know what ticks with the audience and what doesn't...
"Family ties, emotional bonding, Indianess , all that works with audiences. We Indians are all emotional and sensitive people. Our traditions, culture and upbringing is like that. That's why I try to play on that emotion, on that spirit which is about being Indian, whether it is in our country, or with Indians settled abroad. The minute you say 'It's all about loving your parents...' it touches people. Stories on love, sacrifice and family bonding appeal to our audiences."
What is your opinion of Karan's story-telling sense? Isn't that the clinching factor for the success of all his movies?
"If his first film wouldn't have been successful, he wouldn't have been here today. I gave Karan the same opportunity I gave my other directors; he got the same platform and same treatment, no preferential treatment. I've given him all that he needs to make a film; he's done a good job and proved it - it's on-screen, it's the verdict of the people. I believe he will continue to make great films."
With a spate of so many young directors on the horizon, how do you rate Karan as a director?
"His sense is amazing. One thing you will be shocked to know is that he has never written a script. He can narrate a subject to you, just like you will be seeing it. He tells you a story just the way you will be watching it on-screen, minus the background score, the effects and the music. The day the shooting starts, he narrates the story to his assistant director and he writes the script."
With decades of experience in the film industry, who according to you is the finest actor Bollywood can boast of today?
"I think Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan have superb intensity and appeal. Saif in his own way is also really good. For me the relationships are more important than the stars and I have a great relationship with these stars."
And any favourite actress?
"No doubt it is Kajol; and now Preity is doing a very good job, too. Then Rani has really improved and made a mark, and has come to stay here." *

Yash Johar passes away
By: A Mid Day Correspondent
June 27, 2004
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A humble beginning as a still photographer, a walk up the ladder into Mumbai’s motion picture industry as production assistant and then production controller, a brief hiatus from films and then, post-’90s a stratospheric rise — Yash Johar’s cinema innings is the stuff of gradual progression; a neat crescendo, and finally a near numero uno position at which he left us last night at Bandra’s Lilavati Hospital.
“I joined Navketan many decades ago and worked with Vijay Anand as a family member,” septuagenarian Johar had said on his mentor Anand’s death earlier this year.
And “family member” is the most top-of-the-mind description that appears every time Johar has been talked about among those he associated with in a career spanning about four decades.
Cinema is an industry where a producer’s role is expectedly seen as one of a shrewd manager or an astute businessman.
For Johar — better known as “Tom uncle” by Bollywood’s younger denizens — to be singularly recognised at public platforms, as “the nicest man around” remains no mean feat.
And then to double up this appreciation with three of the biggest grossers of contemporary cinema (son Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Nikhil Advani’s Kal Ho Naa Ho) is obviously an enviable entry on any filmmaker’s resume.
This, from the same man who also got Amitabh Bachchan the only National Award on his resume — Agneepath (1990). And from the same man who recruited the topmost leading men of their generations — from Dilip Kumar (Duniya), Raaj Kumar (Muqaddar Ka Faisla), Bachchan, to of course, Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan.
Johar may be better remembered best among neo-cinephiles for his son Karan, mainstream movies’ young prodigy and one of his father’s biggest contributions to big-budget films. His peers and colleagues will of course remember him as a ‘friend in need’.
But for most else, Johar should be remembered as a man with grit and determination to bounce back.
After his debut Dostana (1980), the never-say-die filmmaker had seen through a string of reverses in his profession to actually change track and enter the garment export business.
That he then returned to his calling and reorganised Dharma Productions into a powerful entity as it stands today is a tale of inspiration. Not many in show business die at 75, and yet at the peak of their careers.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Hrithik Roshan: This is a very personal loss. I am in Delhi right now and I have cancelled my shoot to return to Bombay as soon as possible.
Sunil Dutt: I had known him for years, we worked together in many films and he was a family member. He was a man for everybody and anybody in trouble.
Farah Khan: I knew Yash uncle from the time I did Duplicate, and since then I’ve been a part of their family. He was the most generous and big-hearted person that I knew.
Mahesh Bhatt: Everyone in the film industry respected him. He was a decent, ambitious man. His memories shall be with us forever.

Cinema India: Bollywood > Goodbye, Yashji...a personal tribute
Mumbai, June 27 (IANS) :
"Don't worry. I'll keep you posted," Karan reassured me Saturday evening. A few hours later, Yash Johar was gone.
We all knew it was coming for some months now. During the shooting of the Johars' last film "Kal Ho Na Ho" in New York last year, during a routine check-up Yash Johar was found to be terminally ill.
He had been in considerable pain in New York for some time. True to his long and winding training as a dedicated soldier on a film set, Yashji suppressed his pain for as long as he could. Even his son and wife were unaware of the pain.
"He didn't want any of us in New York to be disturbed. That's my dad for you," Karan confided.
Then one day, Yashji quietly slipped away from the gruelling shooting schedules in New York for medical advice. He knew he was dying. A pall of gloom descended on the entire team in New York. The title song of the film "Har pal yahan khul ke jiyo kal kya pataa kal ho na ho...(Live life to the full for you never know what may happen tomorrow)" assumed a new meaning for everyone on the sets.
"Everyone fell into a depression. But my father continued to function normally. Not for a day did he let us feel his pain. Completing the shooting on schedule was more important to him than his health," Karan said emotionally when he returned from New York.
The show always went on for this passionate cineaste.
Yashji's love for cinema extended way beyond the mere art, craft and commerce of the business of entertainment. To him, movies were the life and breath of his existence. Though he never directed a film, his knowledge of movies far exceeded that of some of directors who were employed by him for his banner.
He was part of the film industry since 1952, serving as production controller for Sunil Dutt's and Dev Anand's films. After years as a production controller, Yash Johar launched Dharma Productions in 1976.
In 1980 the banner produced the hit "Dostana", directed by Raj Khosla. That also launched Yashji's association with Amitabh Bachchan.
It was the last hit that the renowned Khosla directed. Ironically, it was also the only success that Yash Johar's production house saw...until his 25-year old son announced his decision to direct a film for his own banner.
The announcement shocked and surprised Yashji. So far he saw his son as the bright fun-loving heir apparent who would one day take over the production reins.
Karan's "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" gave back Yashji the pride, dignity and honour that his earlier productions had robbed him of. Though not one to complain openly, it was an open secret in the film industry that Yashji was emotionally and financially distressed by his earlier mammoth productions "Gumrah" and "Duplicate".
After "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai", there was no looking back for Dharma Productions. When Johar Jr came to his dad with ideas for his second film, Yashji was told Karan wanted Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya, Shah Rukh, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena.
Yashji nodded solemnly. "Yes, son. But it isn't wise to make a number of films together." He never imagined Karan would put together that mammoth cast in one film.
The size of "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" bothered the man of experience who as production controller had seen and suffered every showbiz vagary, from star tantrums to absentee directors.
I met Yashji after "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" and congratulated him for the film making him rich so many times over. "Oh, but I am rich in many richer ways. I've so many friends and well-wishers," the soft-spoken patriarch's eyes sparkled with emotion.
True, I know of no other film personality who garnered so much goodwill. Yash and Hiroo Johar are by far the most popular couple in Bollywood.
Everyone from Amitabh Bachchan to Preity Zinta adored them, so much so that the Bachchan couple felt insulted when Karan offered to pay them for "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham".
"Charge money from Yashji, never!" Bachchan was adamant.
I met Yashji a few months back at the Johars' residence in Bandra. It was a sleepy Sunday afternoon and the man of the house was lounging in bed, surrounded by newspapers. Apart from some bottles of tablets, there was no evidence of any illness in the bright sunny, normal and healthy household.
"I'm in bed only because it's Sunday," Yashji smiled mischievously. He then spoke animatedly on his favourite subject. His comments on some of the recent films were priceless.
I remember how relieved and happy Karan was when all those lifetime achievement awards were given to Yashji earlier this year. Everyone knew time was running out for this wonderful man of the movies who, in dealing with the rituals of escapism never lost touch with reality. The number of people within the film industry whom Yashji bailed out during a crisis is legion.
This was a man whom anyone could count on during the hour of need.
There was a huge age gap between father and son and Karan thought of his father more as a grandfather than father.
Grand Yash Johar certainly was. I've never come across so much goodwill and love for any one personality. In recent years, Yash Johar had certainly become a movie moghul.
But that trademark humility never left him. He had seen too many ups and downs to get carried away by success.
At the end Yash Johar's actual success was the look of indescribable desolation on the face of all the film personalities who gathered at the Leelavati hospital to bid him a final farewell. It was a grand send-off.
Yashji must be looking down with some satisfaction on a life well lived.

A pall of gloom descended on Bollywood after the news of his death spread. Several film stars and directors rushed to his house. Shahrukh Khan, who was at his bedside, is reported to have 'cried like a baby', while Amitabh Bachchan was among the first to reach the Johars' residence.

A cinematic era ends with Yash Johar
New Delhi/Mumbai, June 27
An era in the Indian film industry has come to an end with the passing away of producer Yash Johar - the unspoken father of Bollywood - who will be remembered most for bringing exotic and alluring foreign locales for the first time to Indian audiences through his lavish blockbusters.
Johar, who passed away Saturday night in Leelvati Hospital at 9.30, in Mumbai after a week long illness, began his career as a photographer in 1952. He picked up the finer aspects of film production from the cinema gurus like S. Mukherjee, Dev Anand and Sunil Dutt while working as a production assistant.
It was during this period that Johar came into "Ajanta Arts". Johar worked for productions of internationally acclaimed Fritz Lang and Arthur Ranks. He became associated with films like Mujhe Jeene Do and Yeh Raaste Hai Pyaar Ke.
Johar was asked by Dev Anand to handle the entire production of his cinematic landmark film Guide. Dev Anand's entrusted Yash Johar with the production work of Jewel Thief, Prem Pujari and Hare Rama Hare Krishna. Johar handled the production of Mumbai-based Filmalaya's Love in Simla, I. S. Johar's Johar Mehmood in Goa and Nasir Hussain's Jab Pyar Kissi Se Hota Hai.
He launched his own banner Dharma Productions Pvt. Ltd in 1976 starting with his old friend Raj Khosla in Dostana (which starred Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha in the lead roles) and followed it up with landmark films like Agneepath which fetched for Amitabh Bachchan his National Award for Best Actor) and Gumrah with Sanjay Dutt and Sridevi. Subsequently, in 1995 Dharma Productions became a proprietorship concern.
Johar studied his audiences and acquired the skills of an emotional puppeteer who could feel the pulse of the masses. On command he made his audience laugh, cry or tense up in suspense. Dharma Productions Pvt. Ltd. has been responsible for giving some of the greatest blockbusters of Indian cinema in recent times.
The unforgettable Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (which starred superstars Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan), with its bright colours and irresistible cast made it an instant success. Yash Johar received the prestigious Indian National Award from the President of India in 1999 for the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
From then on every movie title was as long as a sentence and the hero and heroine were inescapably called Rahul and Anjali. Before his audience had time to recover he came out with Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (which had a casting coup of the decade - with Amitabh Bachchan leading the pack, followed by Shahrukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Jaya Bachchan, Kajol and Kareena Kapoor along with Rani Mukherji). This movie catered precisely to the taste of his family audiences complete with the fantasy lifesyles, the long lost brother, a touch of patriotism and the great exotic locales.
The latest in line was Kal Ho Naa Ho (starring once again Shahrukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta), which was directed by debutant Nikhil Advani and turned out to complete the hat-trick of success stories.
Johar was also associate producer (India) for Jungle Book a Walt Disney venture, which was shot extensively in India in 1994. His Dharma Productions subsequently worked as a production service company for Disney in The Last Dance (1995) and Armageddon (199http://www.kajol-boards.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool2.gif following the success of the first venture.
Johar besides being a film producer was associated with trade organisations like Film Producers Guild of India, The Association of Motion Pictures and TV Programme Producers, Film Industry Welfare Trust and United Producers Forum. Johar will be best remembered as the first producer to choose picturesque backdrops in Switzerland and Britain for his films. He was also honoured by the Swiss government for his contribution to promoting tourism from India to that country. Johar was conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Zee Cine Awards function last month.

Yash Johar was truly loved by one and all. May his soul rest in peace. The entire bollywood clan all look so sad, very heart wrenching to see Karan and SRK looking so lost and puffyeyed with grief. I expect we did'nt see Kajol in the pics as probably she's comforting Karan's mother being that she's the closest to their family next to Gauri and Jaya Bacchan ( in the female side ).

<font color='#348781'>Bollywood`s father figure is no more
By Lata Khubchandani, India Syndicate
Monday, 28 June , 2004, 09:18
Yash Johar passed away at Mumbai's Leelavati Hospital after a fight with cancer and a recent complication which had hospitalised him. The last moment came at 9.55 on Saturday night. With his passing away, Bollywood loses one of its best-loved father figures.
Dharma Productions has been relatively a new production house, in that there are other older production houses in Bollywood. Yash Johar had endeared himself to all those who worked with him by treating every member of his cast and crew with incredible affection and filial empathy so that everyone would rave about working in this family-like atmosphere.
His affection spilled over onto his film units always. And everyone wanted to be part of Dharma Productions. Recently, Nikhil Advani who had made his film Kal Ho Naa Ho for Dharma Productions and had moved out claimed that there was no ill will between them and in fact Yash Johar had even attended the opening of Nikhil's new office. Even if there was any rancour between them, Yash Johar was too magnanimous to show it.
As Anu Malik puts it succinctly: "I worked with him only in Duplicate, but for me he is a super human being - you won't believe each time I had any trouble of any kind – legal, income tax etc - I'd call up Yash Uncle and burden him with my problems and however busy he might be, he always left everything and sorted out my problem advised me gave me papers etc that I might need and helped me out. He was a father figure to me and I suspect to many others."
“You know I can't help feeling that it was good that he was present to see the tremendous success his son Karan achieved - what more could a father want? I pray that Hiroo aunty, his wife and Karan his son, get the strength to bear this huge loss. People like Yash Johar don't happen again and again - he was generosity and kindness personified. He had struggled so much in his life that he empathised with everyone. And, despite the success his production house saw he retained the humility he had started with. His humility was always a matter of discussion for everyone in the industry,” adds Anu Malik.
The man who started his career as a photographer in films went to be production assistant with the likes of Navketan Films and Sunil Dutt`s Ajanta Arts and finally with Dostana started his own production house.
It had its hiccups and at one time he almost quit films to start an export business but he returned to his best loved profession - Hindi films. At a personal level everyone saw in him a father figure, an ever-ready willingness to help those in trouble.

<font color='#348781'>Good-bye, Yashji! A Personal Tribute
By Subhash K Jha
Monday, 28 June , 2004, 08:45
The end, like all ends, was somewhat sudden. I was in constant touch with my friend Karan Johar at the hospital where his dad had been admitted with what was originally a minor surgery in the urinary tract. (Also see images: from the funeral of Yash Johar)
"Don’t worry. I’ll keep you posted," Karan reassured me on Sunday evening. A few hours later Yash Johar was gone.
We all knew it was coming for some months now. During the shooting of the Johars’ last film Kal Ho Naa Ho in New York last year, during a routine checkup Yashji was found to be terminally ill. He had been under considerable pain in NY for some time. True to his long and winding training as dedicated soldiier on a film set, Yashji suppressed his pain for as long as he could. Even his son and wife were unaware of the pain. (Also read: Bollywood`s father figure is no more!http://www.kajol-boards.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink2.gif
"He didn’t want any of us at New York to be disturbed. That’s my Dad for you," Karan confided.
Then one day quietly Yashji slipped away from the gruelling shooting schedules in NY for medical advice. He knew he was dying. A pall of gloom descended on the entire team in New York. The title song of the film Har pal yahan khul ke jiyo, kal kya pataa kal ho na ho...assumed a new meaning for everyone on the sets.
"Everyone fell into a depression. But my father continued to function normally. Not for a day did he let us feel his pain. Completing the shooting on schedule was more importannt to him than his health," said Karan emotionally when he returned from New York.
The show always went on for this passionate cineaste. Yashji‘s love for the cinema extended way beyond the mere art craft and commerce of the business of entertainment. (Discuss: In the absence of his father, who was the silent strength of his movies, will son Karan be able to wield his magic wand and churn out superhits? Asks Sify user `Freaking`.)
To him the movies were the life and breath of his existence. Though he never directed a film, his knowledge of the movies far exceeded that of some of the official directors who were employed by him to direct films for his banner.
He was part of the film industry since 1952, serving as production controller for Sunil Dutt’s and Dev Anand’s films. After years as a production controller Yash Johar launched Dharma Productions in 1976. In 1980 The banner produced the hit Dostana, directed by Raj Khosla. There began Yashji’s association with Amitabh Bachchan.
It was the last hit that renowned Khosla directed. Ironically it was also the only success that Yash Johar’s production house saw...until his 25-year old son announced his decision to direct a film for his own banner. The announcement shocked and surprised Yashji. So far he saw his son as the bright fun-loving heir apparent who would one day take over the production reins.
Karan’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai gave back Yashji the pride, dignity and honour which his earlier productions had robbed him off. Though not one to complain openly, it was an open secret in the film industry that Yashji was emotionally and financially distressed by his earlier mammoth productions Gumrah and Duplicate.
After Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, there was no looking back for Dharma Productions. When Johar Jr came to his Dad with ideas for his second film, Yashji was told Karan wanted Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya, Shah Rukh, Kajol, Hrithik and Kareena...
Yashji nodded solemnly. "Yes, Beta. But it isn’t wise to make a number of films together." He never imagined Karan would put together that mammoth cast in one film. The size of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham bothered the man of experience who as production controller had seen and suffered every showbiz–vagary, from star tantrums to absentee directors.
I met Yashji after Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and congratulated him for making him rich so many times over.
"Oh, but I am rich in many richer ways. I’ve so many friends and well-wishers," the softspoken patriarch’s eyes sparkled with emotion.
True, I know of no other film personality who garnered so much goodwill. Yash and Hiroo Johar are by far the most popular couple in Bollywood. Everyone from Amitabh Bachchan to Preity Zinta adores them, so much so that the Bachchan couple felt insulted when Karan offered to pay them for Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.
"Charge money from Yashji, never!" Mr Bachchan was adamant.
I met Yashji a few months back at the Johars’ residence in Bandra. It was a sleepy Sunday afternoon and the man of the house was lounging in bed surrounded by newspapers. Apart from some bottles of tablets, there was no evidence of any illness in the bright sunny normal and healthy household.
"I’m in bed only because it’s Sunday," Yashji smiled mischievously.
The number of people within the film industry whom Yashji bailed out during a crisis, is legion.
This was a man whom anyone could count on during the hour of need.
There was a huge age gap between father and son. And Karan thought of his father more as a grandfather than father.
Grand, Yash Johar certainly was. I’ve never come across so much goodwill and love for any one personality. In recent years Yash Johar had certainly become a movie moghul. But that trademark humility never left him. He had seen too many ups and downs, too many superstars come and go to get carried away by that thing called success.
At the end Yash Johar’s actual success was the look of indescribable deosolation on the face of all the film personalities who gathered at the Leelavati hospital to bid him a final farewell. It was a grand send-off. Yashji must be looking down with some satisfaction a life well lived.

<font color='#348781'>The courage to live
By: Pooja Bedi
June 28, 2004
Ancient Egyptians believed that upon death they would be asked two questions and their answers would determine whether they could continue their journey in the afterlife. The first question was, “Did you bring joy?” The second was, “Did you find joy?”
Yash Joharji’s movies certainly put a lot of smiles on people’s faces. His recent movies — Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and Kal Ho Na Ho — evoked tears, cheers, laughter, and applause.
He may have moved on to a different dimension, but death is most difficult for those who have been left behind.
My heart goes out to his young, talented son Karan Johar, who teamed up with his dad, brought him back into the spotlight and went from strength to strength together with him. No matter how much you prepare yourself for the death of a parent, it’s the hardest thing in the world to come to terms with.
My mom used to say that grieving for those that have died was the most selfish thing to do and that it was all about “I”. “I” grieve, “I” remember, “I” miss, “I” want and “I” need that person. From early childhood, she requested us to never cry at her funeral pyre because it would hamper and hold back the journey of her soul.
“Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.”
My mother always spoke of death as something unavoidable, destined to happen and therefore, something that should not be feared. She viewed it as a comma, not a full stop. She described vividly through scriptures, mythology and through religion, the wondrous journey of the soul evolving and purifying itself with good deeds and positive energy with each of its karmic cycles from life form to life form, body to body and into other dimensions, until it finally merged with the Paramatma.
But then, that was her theory. Islam doesn’t believe in rebirth, and Christianity has the concept of heaven and hell. The fact is that none of us know for sure what lies beyond the moment of death, and the unknown terrifies us.
But why are we so scared to die, when most of us don’t have the courage to live? I walked into a crowded market place and just sat for half an hour and watched all the people go by. Most of them walked with hunched shoulders, ambling along, their expressions ranging from bored, tired, anxious, and sad to looking defeated!
What a waste of life to merely exist; to go through the motions, the rituals, the years and finally roll over and die. You are born and you will die, these two details are a given. However, there is a lovely expedition in between called life. It’s a fabulous journey that should be filled with dreams, fantasy, imagination, knowledge, reality and understanding.
Your quality of life is not pre-determined by the religion, nationality, caste, status or gender you are born into.
The joy of living is in being alive; of knowing that it’s a one-way street, and to live wholeheartedly with the consciousness that you will not pass this way again. I read recently that in the end only three things matter, “How deeply you loved; how fully you lived and how well you learnt to let go of things not meant for you”.
Positivity breeds positivity, so let go of the bitterness of the past and the dread of an uncertain tomorrow, wake up, live life and spread some joy.
“Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.
I am the surf, gently lapping on the shore.
I am the rustling sound of leaves, blowing across the moor.
I am the smile upon your face;
I am the happiness you embrace.”

<u>
Yash Uncle never let anyone down
</u>
Anu Malik | June 28, 2004 11:18 IST
I was speaking to [son] Karan [Johar] earlier in the day [Saturday, June 26, the day Yash Johar passed away], and he said it would take a day or two to decide on his health [Johar was admitted to Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital on June 19, and was diagnosed with severe chest infection]. Now he is no more.
For me it is really as if a father figure passed away. I worked with him only in one film, Duplicate, but I have been able to approach him with any problem and he has always sorted it out for me -- be it income tax or any legal matter.
I only had to call him. He would put everything else aside, heard me out, and do whatever necessary to help. It is difficult to express how much it means to have a shoulder to lean on in times of trouble. That was what Yash Uncle was to me and, I suspect, to many others, too.
Though he saw so much success, he remained grounded. I am just happy he was there to see his son's success and achievements.
He started life from the grassroots level and moved on to become one of the biggest producers in the country. His son has imbibed his values from him.
The sincerity Yash Uncle showed to anyone who came into his life was remarkable. You will hear everyone say that he treated them like family. That is not an exaggeration at all. He really was generous in his affections.
I remember, during the shooting of Duplicate, Juhi Chawla's mother passed away. At great financial loss to himself, he did everything to bring the body home to India, to support Juhi. I know they were to shoot some songs there, but he stopped everything to sort things out for Juhi. Time, money etc, nothing mattered more than human relationships.
He was a gem of a person and towered high as a human being. I don't think Yash Uncle let anyone down in his life; others may have taken advantage of him and let him down, but he would still be smiling..
I remember during the International Indian Film Awards, everyone paid tribute to him this year in Singapore, but when his son Karan spoke of his father, you could see he was confronting the fact that his father was critically ill [with cancer].
I pray for Karan and his mother who require support at this time. May god give them the strength to bear this loss.

I agree with Rjt that none of the close family members and friends were mentioned like Gauri, Jaya, Wives of Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra and Kajol and my guess is being that they are married ladies, they are probably involved in some rituals with Karan's mother as per the hindu rites. I would be very disappointed if Kajol did not show her support to Karan by her absense at this crucial time, but knowing her abhorrence for publicity and her closeness to the Johar family, I am sure she is a strong pillar of strength behind the scenes.

VETERAN Bollywood film-maker Yash Johar has died in a suburban Mumbai hospital following a chest infection, which is thought to have been brought on by cancer.
Johar, 75, produced several major blockbusters since his first film, Dostana, in 1980.
He was cremated yesterday and the ceremony was attended by the leading lights of Bollywood, including Amitabh Bachchan, Juhi Chawla and Shah Rukh Kahn. Hi son, director Karan Johar, lit the funeral pyre.

Only members of his immediate family were aware of his cancer.
He was admitted to Lilavati Hospital a week ago because of repeated complaints of fever.

A father figure to some, a friend to others
‘It’s like I’ve lost another father,’ says Shah Rukh at Yash Johar’s funeral.
Express Features Service
Mumbai, June 27: Har pal yahan jee bhar jiyon... jo hai samaa kal ho naa ho. The evocative words from Yash Johar’s last production, Kal Ho Naa Ho, have taken on a new meaning after his death on Saturday.
Johar, who is survived by wife Hiroo and director-son Karan, was cremated on Sunday at the Shivaji Park electric crematorium, Dadar.
Karan, accompanied by veteran director Yash Chopra and actor Abhishek Bachchan, arrived in an ambulance with Johar’s body.
The Hindi film industry came out in full force to pay their respects to one of the most respected names in Bollywood.
Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Ambani and Shah Rukh Khan came in separate cars.
‘‘I miss my own parents a lot. But now I feel I’ve lost another father. He stood for everything beautiful in my life. The film industry is a wonderful place and Yash Johar was the most wonderful part of it,’’ Khan told Newsline.
Others who attended the funeral were Dilip Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Subhash Ghai, Javed Akhtar with son Farhan, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukerji, Rakesh Roshan with son Hrithik, Fardeen Khan, Randhir and Rishi Kapoor, Vinod Chopra and Anupam Kher.
Speaking to Newsline, Sunil Dutt said, ‘‘Aisa lag raha hai ki jaise mere ghar ka insaan chala gaya hai (It feels as if I have lost someone from my own home).’’
Dutt saab spoke about Johar’s deep passion for cinema and his keen eye for detail. ‘‘He was the production assistant for my films Yeh Raaste Hain Pyar Ke and Mujhe Jeene Do. Watching him work, I could sense that he would become a big producer one day.’’
He also spoke about how Johar had been a pillar of strength when son Sanjay was arrested. ‘‘He stood by me like a younger brother,’’ he said.
Actor Jeetendra spoke of his deep friendship with Johar. ‘‘I never worked with him, yet he was a genuine friend. He is an example that in this industry, friendships can grow and thrive without any maksad (reason) and work.’’
Director Subhash Ghai called Johar one of Bollywood’s goodwill ambassadors. ‘‘He was the first one to help in times of crisis. I remember him telling me during the making of Vidhata that I’d become a very big director some day.’’
Nikhil Advani, who directed Kal Ho Naa Ho, declined to comment on Johar’s influence. ‘‘Whatever I wanted to say to him, I have...’’ he said.
Incidentally, Advani had recently exited from Johar’s Dharma Productions and branched out on his own.

<u>
Farewell, Uncle Tom
</u>AFSANA AHMED
TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ MONDAY, JUNE 28, 2004 09:36:53 PM ]
Shah Rukh Khan talks of his close association with Yash Johar as he bemoans the loss of his 'surrogate father'.
He was my 'Tom Uncle'. I gave him that name after the popular American classic Uncle Tom's Cabin, five or six years ago. Thereafter, the entire film industry started calling Yash Johar by that name.
You know why I gave him that name? I distinctly remember my first trip abroad, and as it always happens to everyone on their first trip out of the country, I was clueless about certain things. You know how it is in a foreign country - you're alone, a little lost, selfconscious...
Yash Uncle came to my rescue, and organised everything, be it at the airport or at the hotels or dealing with customs. Tom Uncle's presence gave me tremendous confidence.
Initially, he found his new name a little funny, he would tell me, but gradually when everybody around him started calling him by that name, he got used to it.
Uncle Tom lived life to the fullest. He was a great helper. Irrespective of whether he knew the person or not, Yash Uncle was always there when somebody needed him. Believe me, I've never seen somebody so selflessly wanting to be a part of others' unhappy moments.
Yash uncle was famous for attending the maximum number of funerals. We would tease him a lot. He didn't care whether it was dawn or midnight, he would just land up to mourn with the aggrieved.
He was the best organiser I have ever seen. When Juhi Chawla and I set up our company, Tom Uncle was there for us as usual, taking care of most of our production stuff. And we were always relaxed knowing that the best manager is part of my extended family.
I didn't have my parents, so I considered him my father. He is my surrogate father, and his family my surrogate family. He was a godfather to my children, Aryan and Suhana, as well. I didn't take them to the hospital, but yes, Aryan is aware of losing a loved one. Suhana is too small to understand.
I will miss him, but I have to come to terms that Tom Uncle has gone back , leaving behind wonderful memories. May his soul rest in peace. *

Preity got close to the Johar while doing KHNH , she is a very close friend of Karan now !.

I guess Kads drove Karan to seek friendship with Preity as she was busy with her baby during the first year. As per her interview which you posted, Kajol apparently told her friends not to call her the first 6 months and when Karan visited her, told him Hi and Bye and packed him away !!! No wonder the poor guy did'nt know what hit him amd sought Preity and Rani's company. Anyway, Hope Kads and Karan are back to bosom buddies now that Nysa is older.

Good to see Kajol there too... Yeah Preity has become really close with the Johar during the shooting of KHNH... And now during the shooting of YC yet-to-be title film, she and SRK has become really close friends... Anyways, it must be really hard for Karan, his mother, and their friends... especially SRK... But I wish them all the best!!

Condolences to Karan's family. May Yash Uncle soul rest in peace. It is a sad time for us all particularly for Bollywood in his demise...the kindhearted person that he is, it is hard to find someone like him again.

Bachchan’s ‘Dostana’ continues with Yash Johar
</u>01st July 2004 11.25 IST
By ApunKaChoice Bureau
Even though Yash Johar breathed his last on Monday, Bachchan’s ‘Dostana’ continues with the late producer, the father of Karan Johar .
In the year 1980, Dostana was the first film to be produced by Johar under his banner Dharma Productions. Amitabh Bachchan played the lead role in that film.
Bachchan has got the National Award for Best Actor only once, in 1990 for his portrayal of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan in the film Agneepath. That film was also produced by Johar’s Dharma Productions.
Dharma Productions got one of their biggest hits when Karan directed Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in 2001. Bachchan played the role of the father of Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan in the film.
And now as a mark of respect to the gentleman producer, Bachchan has postponed the launch of his movie Virudh. The launch that was supposed to be held this week at the Grand Hyatt in Mumbai will now happen around a week later.
Virudh stars Sharmila Tagore and Sanjay Dutt along with Bachchan. It is to be directed by Mahesh Manjrekar .
By postponing the launch of his film, Bachchan has proved that his ‘Dostana’ continues with Johar even after his demise.

A shoe story
</u>
As expected, the attendance at the chautha ceremony of veteran producer Yash Johar on June 29 was over-crowded. Top stars, producers, directors, music directors, industrialists were all there at The Club to pay their condolences.
Although arrangements had been made for collecting people’s footwear, secured in plastic bags, and handing out tokens to the persons concerned, the retrieval became a nightmarish experience for many. When it was time to leave, there was pandemonium as people jostled, pushed, shoved and pulled to get back their footwear in return for the tokens.
Despite their best efforts, the persons at the counter just couldn’t cope with what looked like a sea of humanity. There were some industry people who took as long as an hour only to lay their hands on their shoes!
Sensing the chaos that would happen at the end, Shah Rukh Khan who was standing at the entrance cautioned several people to keep their shoes in their cars rather than at the counter so that they wouldn’t have to stand in the long queue.

YASH JOHAR: A SUPER-HIT IN HEAVEN!

YASH JOHAR is in heaven, having left behind a sea of warm memories and unparalleled goodwill. True to the Lifetime Achievement awards he was given recently, his is a classic example of a "lifetime marked with consecutive achievements". Like a friend who met Yash Uncle at a chemist at Napean Sea Road and was bowled over by the man's affability and down-to-earth nature, I must have met him barely twice or thrice but had him almost instantly on my love-list for the tremendous vibes I got from him. To be honest, Yash Johar became Yash Uncle for me because of KARAN. I knew I'd get along famously with the latter when he told me that while one good friend in life was enough, the second was a bonus. That's because by nature I've always been a bit wary of people and taken time in building an association, which I believe, should be for life. But Karan was an exception. In a brief span, I grew immensely fond of him and like his father, K JO (as we fondly call him) is one of the quickest and most adorable friends I have found recently. On the morning of the day Yash Uncle left us, I was with Karan, my friend, with a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye. We knew it wouldn't be long, yet the glimmer
of hope is what kept us all going.
Later that evening, when Uncle's magnanimous heart surrendered itself to God, I didn't have the courage to meet Karan. I sent him a message and prayed. Prayed hard that I'd bridge Karan's loss by being a younger brother to him.

Channel follows 'Guests' at Leelavati Hospital
By Subhash K. Jha
Good grief. On Saturday night when Yash Johar breathed his last, the TV channels had a blast. Without keeping in mind the solemnity of the occasion, Aaj Taj parked its crew in front of Leelavati hospital in Mumbai, recording the comings and goings of celebrities in the manner that news channels had behaved in the hotel lobby at Mr Bachchan’s 60th birthday bash two years ago.
There’s a time and place for the paparazzi. Death is a very private occasion. Aaj Tak should have showed some grace in the face of grief. Instead, the excited female correspondent chirped as though she was at an awards function. “Oh, here comes Salman! He might speak to us.”
Salman simply glared into the camera, got into his car and drove away. No one was willing to speak. So, the Hindi channels got more ambitious. Aaj Tak got Jackie Shroff, while Sahara Samay asked Sanjay Khan (with a cellphone showing on screen in case we miss the point) to comment. The Aaj Tak correspondent parroted the line about Mr Johar’s swach (clean) films all evening. Clean commentary? I’m not very sure if Sanjay Khan and Jackie Shroff were in any way connected to Mr Johar, or whether it makes sense to have people comment on the dead.

DIGNITY IN PAIN
Bhawana Somaaya
Posted online: Friday, July 02, 2004 at 0000 hours IST
Nobody watching the ever-enthusiastic Yash Johar arriving at Dharma Productions’ office, at the stroke of eleven every morning, could have suspected that the 75-year-old filmmaker was awaiting his curtain call *
e was putting up a brave front for more than a year. Smiling at award functions, embracing colleagues at parties, forever cheerful, forever accessible. Nobody watching the ever-enthusiastic Yash Johar arriving at Dharma Productions’ office, at the stroke of eleven every morning, could have suspected that the 75-year-old filmmaker was awaiting his curtain call. Johar first learnt about his ailment almost 18 months ago and characteristically, held back the information. For a long time he refused to acknowledge the symptoms. An eternal optimist, he hoped that the aches and pains would subside on their own, and the doctors would be forced to change their diagnosis. After all, Johar was used to defying medical predictions.
Many years ago, when shooting for Sridevi-starrer Gumraah in Mauritius, Johar had injured his foot and was advised complete bed-rest. But he was up and moving the very next day on the sets, and ten days later, boarding a flight to Mumbai. No amount of cajoling or pleading from wife Hiroo could diminish his spirit. This time too, Johar hoped that he would be able to alter the equations. Except that the stakes were far greater than he had anticipated.
In the coming weeks, he began to lose weight rapidly which was conveniently attributed to the pre-production pressures of their soon-to-be-launched Kal Ho Naa Ho. When it was time to begin the routine tests, Johar manipulated his time spent at the hospital without arousing suspicion either on domestic or work front. Every morning he would leave home telling his wife that he was going for the shooting. And on the way, phone his son to say that he was going to the bank. He’d arrive at Filmcity in the evening, and return home after pack-up to resume the same routine the following day. The only one to know of Johar’s dark secret and the impending tragedy was his old driver, Jeevan. And Jeevan was sworn to loyalty.
For a long time he refused to acknowledge the symptoms. An eternal optimist, he hoped that the aches and pains would subside on their own, and the doctors would be forced to change their diagnosis *
Months rolled by. The first schedule of the film was completed without hitches. The unit was now preparing to leave for a three-month schedule to USA. Johar stayed back on excuse of pending meetings with financiers. The fact was that he was bidding time for an isolated and transparent meeting with his physician. And this time his physician wasn’t willing to indulge his patient. He had warned Johar that they needed to start on further investigations as soon as possible, but Johar had been delaying the procedure. His doctor was upset that he had not yet disclosed his ailment to his family. “If you don’t do it immediately then I will,” his doctor threatened him.
The doctor’s anxiety was understandable. The investigations needed signatures of relatives before embarking on the treatment. They had waited long enough and now time was running out. A week later, Johar arrived in Manhattan. And the following morning, he was on the sets. Until then he had not made up his mind about how and when he was going to break the news to his son. He wasn’t even sure if he was going to first inform his son or his wife. Or maybe, both together. From a distance, he watched Karan scribble furiously on his paper and could sense his tension. Perhaps it was wrong timing. In a corner, director Nikhil Advani was getting ready to stage a crucial scene and there were some last-minute changes. As Johar strolled on the sets, carelessly surveying the furniture, Karan pre-occupied as he was, asked, “You want to tell me something daddy?”
*
There was an awkward pause and involuntarily Johar nodded. He walked to the adjoining room, with Karan following him. As soon as they faced each other, Karan for some strange reason blurted, “You are not suffering from cancer, are you?” There was a long silence and then Karan broke down.
The shooting was cancelled for the day, but resumed the next morning with a resolution that no tragedy would come in the way of work. The schedule carried forward undisturbed as Yash Johar underwent one treatment after another, sometimes in India and sometimes abroad. Doctors were shocked by his stamina and his spirit to fight back the dreaded cancer. Most patients in his condition, they said, would be confined to bed, but Yash Johar was a miracle!
Till the end, he never revealed how much pain he endured. But it must have been enormous knowing the ailment. It’s only when he could bear it no longer, that he succumbed. It has been a landmark journey for the filmmaker. Not only in his career, but in his attitude to life. He set an example in exhibiting dignity in pain.

What a great man, he was such a trooper. Very tragic indeed.

Karan Johar too was a picture of poise as he greeted industry folk who dropped by in dozens at Mumbai’s Lilawati Hospital to enquire about his father, Yash Johar’s health. Karan made sure that his mother was protected from any uncomfortable remarks and took on all queries head on. He loked in complete control and was quietly calm but admitted that this had been a turbulent year for him. “Let’s hope dad comes home soon and things are back to normal,” he prayed.

<font color='#348781'>Adieu Yash Johar
Posted online: Friday, July 02, 2004 at 0000 hours IST
‘Har pal yahan jee bhar jiyon... jo hai samaa kal ho naa ho...’ The evocative words from Yash Johar’s last production, Kal Ho Naa Ho, have taken on a new meaning after his death on June 26.
Johar, who is survived by wife Hiroo and director-son Karan, was cremated in Mumbai on Sunday.
“I miss my own parents a lot. But now I feel I’ve lost another father. He stood for everything beautiful in my life. The film industry is a wonderful place and Yash Johar was the most wonderful part of it,” Shah Rukh Khan asserted.
Others who attended the funeral were Dilip Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Subhash Ghai, Javed Akhtar with son Farhan, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukerji, Rakesh Roshan with son Hrithik, Fardeen Khan, Randhir and Rishi Kapoor, Vinod Chopra and Anupam Kher.
Sunil Dutt said, “Aisa lag raha hai ki jaise mere ghar ka koi chala gaya hai (It feels as if I have lost someone from my own home).” He spoke about Johar’s deep passion for cinema and his keen eye for detail. “He was the production assistant for my films, Yeh Raaste Hain Pyar Ke and Mujhe Jeene Do. Watching him work, I could sense that he would become a big producer one day.” He also spoke about how Johar had been a pillar of strength when son Sanjay was arrested. “He stood by me like a younger brother.”
Actor Jeetendra spoke of his deep friendship with Johar. “I never worked with him, yet he was a genuine friend. He is an example that in this industry, friendships can grow and thrive without any maksad (reason) and work,” he said emotionally.
Director Subhash Ghai called Johar one of Bollywood’s goodwill ambassadors. “He was the first one to help in times of crisis. I remember him telling me during the making of Vidhata that I’d become a very big director some day,” Ghai recalled.

I don't know if this interview with Farah Khan was posted before, ( if so, please delete it Sarah , thanks).
uncle Tom and i got along really well’---Farah Khan, Choreographer,Director
Farah khan on her relationship with yash johar — The man who bollywood ‘genuinely’ loved.
I've known Mr Yash Johar for almost nine years now. I was working on Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge with Aditya Chopra, which was where I met Karan (Johar) and when they were making Duplicate, Karan insisted I do the choreography. Tom Uncle (as we used to call him) and I got along really well. He was really happy that there was someone there who was trying to save money for him. The film took a long time to make, the script kept getting changed and Shah Rukh and I got really close to Tom Uncle. I've been with him for every film since then. I actually wasn't supposed to do Kal Ho Naa Ho, because I was supposed to do my own film, but I did it for him. Once it's a matter of family, it's a matter of family.
I think the film I enjoyed doing the most with him was Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. We all knew it was going to be a hit and Tom Uncle's first real taste of super-success. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was hectic and Kal Ho Naa Ho was sad because by then he had cancer and he knew it.
I think the reason we called him Tom Uncle is because of Shah Rukh. Whenever anyone had any problem with customs or visas or anything like that, Tom Uncle would fix it for them. I think Shah Rukh meant to call him Uncle Sam or something like that, but somehow it became Tom.
He had a very strange, deadpan sense of humour. He was hard of hearing in one ear, so Karan and I were always cracking up at the way he heard one thing and said another. He used to always joke that after the amount of money he spent on the songs I did for his films, I would win the best choreographer award for smaller films.
He was the most generous man. I remember we had gone to Prague to shoot Duplicate and on the first day, Juhi's mother passed away. He cancelled the shoot, brought everyone back, and instead of just shooting at filmcity or something, he took the entire unit back after three months, and never made anyone feel guilty about it. He handled everything very calmly.
I could ask him for anything, as many dancers, whatever sets. It was like asking my own dad. We would both joke about how we were trying to save money and Karan would be the one always spending all the money. He would never try to cut corners and everyone was always very well looked after. Normally, on a silver jubilee, the trophies are sent just to the big names, but he used to make sure that even my assistants got trophies.
That's why the whole industry was there at the funeral. Not to be seen but because everyone genuinely loved him.
(As told to Leo Mirani)
